Dr. Yashadatta Somaji Alone born 1963, at Chandrapur Maharashtra and Studied BFA (Drawing & Painting ) from Chitrakala Mahavidyalaya Nagpur and M. A. (Fine) Art History, Faculty Of Fine Arts, M. S. University, Baroda.He was awarded University Grant Commission of India’s Junior Research fellowship in 1988 in the History of Art. He further studied M.PHIL in Ancient History at Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and obtained Ph. D. from Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University , New Delhi , on : ’Forms and Patronage in Early Buddhist Art and Architecture: A Study of Early Western Indian Buddhist Caves’, under the supervision of Prof. R. Champakalakshmi. Presently he is working as Asst. Professor in School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi from 8th March 2007 onwards. Previously he worked at Dept. of Archaeology, Deccan College Post Graduate Research Institute (deemed university) Pune and at Department of Fine Arts Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra. He has published several research papers in journals and chapters in edited volumes on Ancient Indian Art, critic of Walter Spink, Ajanta caves and Buddhist caves in western India, critic of modern Indian art, popular neo-Buddhist visual culture, interpretative frame-work of Dr. Ambedkar and social sciences.He has involved himself in writing some art exhibition catalogues as a point of departure to critic the idea of meta-narratives of modernity as tracing the difference.His research interests include ancient Indian art, Buddhist art, modern Indian art and popular visual culture, Neo-Buddhist visual culture as well general social sciences. Dr. Y. S. Alone presented research papers at national and international art-history and social sciences seminars, conferences at many places in India and abroad. He has lectured widely at many places in the country including Ambedkar memorial lecture at Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University Aurangabad, endowment lecture at Nagpur University etc. as well as outside India mainly Sweden and Germany. He was engaged by UNESCO to deliver several lectures at Delhi, Banaras, Patana, Aurangabad for heritage monument programmes. He visited several museums in India and in Holland, Germany and Sweden. He has been engaged in popular lectures as part of social movements. Y S. Alone also served as members of various Government committees such as the Education Sub-committees of Govt. of Madhya Pradesh, University Grant Commission, All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), Indian Council of Historical Research, Board of post-graduate and under-graduate Studies of Fine Arts, K.U. Kurukshetra, 1998-2006, Society of South Asian Archaeology, Pune, Academic Council of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Member, Research Committee of MFA by research, BAMU, Aurangabad, Member, international Advisory Committee of Korean Association of Asian Studies, Seoul South Korea, Member, Board of Study, Department of Art-history, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. He is also a member of editorial board for the journal - The Journal of South Asian Archaeology- Ancient Asia.
